Peeved in Corbin, Kentucky
ONE CENT: You have a great idea here! It may be unsafe to have young kids picking up trash by the side of the road, however if there are areas by the roadside that need clean-up, there are probably other areas in your town that need some help too – a park, a nearby pond or lake, the schoolyard? Sometimes it only takes a small effort to start a movement. If you organize a neighborhood clean-up involving people young and old, it may inspire the knuckleheads next door to think twice before they throw their soda cans and trash out their car window. Good luck and have fun!
TWO CENT: Dear Peeved,
I think it's important to get the knuckleheads, rather, the community involved in your efforts! Send a press release to your local paper with the following information:
-- When your trash pick up is taking place
-- Who is invited to join you
-- What time
-- Why you chose that particular location
-- What is interesting, unusual or unique about your trash pick up (or the location)
-- How you are planning to do the clean up
While One Cent has a good point about safety, it's a basically easy project almost anyone can participate in. Just go outside, hold your nose, and get to work!
