Boring Me to Death

I think David is hitting it on the head when he claims that Lambert's great sin here is not his inappropriate celebration of hedonism. Its his predictability. Lambert, you really think you are going to press boundaries with this performance? Pull up any Whitesnake video from the 80's for an example of how badly you were scooped (and it was tired even then). The great irony is that this completely banal performance was performed while singing "For Your Entertainment." Please go here for an example of how "entertaining" a live performance can be at an Award's show.  I feel like I am becoming the Press Secretary for the "This Is It" press junket -- so please forgive another plug -- but I loved "Michael Jackson's This Is It" for the same reason I hated the Lambert performance. Based on what I witnessed in the MJ movie he sweated details. He worked. He took his job so seriously as an entertainer he pushed himself to exhaustion and ultimately death. He searched the nether reaches of his talent in order to entertain me for 2-3 minutes at a time. Some might argue that Michael had personal weaknesses off stage so severe that it taints what he does onstage. Others claim that a Michael Jackson comes around only so often and, as my wife points out, "It is unfair to expect J-Lo or Lambert or anyone else to perform like him." Okay. But isn't that the point of an Awards show? Shouldn't a performance for a worldwide audience be reserved for people of unique abilities and for a performance that is otherwise--entertaining? To the personal weakness argument--it is a fair point. However, if I only watched or listened to the people who lived by my own moral code--I would have to empty out my itunes library (including the videos made by me). Nonetheless, shame on you Lambert. Not for your scantily clad boys and girls on stage or your risque choreography. Shame on you for boring me to death.
