Adventures in Costumes

Editor's Note: I asked our contributors for their best Halloween costume stories.  Here is the first of our responses:

Most memorable was a few Halloweens ago as we debated at which age  we established a demarcation line for those dressing up and approaching the door or joining those walking with the silent throng of boorish adults on the street. Tired of the meandering conversation that was edging toward shaming the older kids for continuing to dress up and the youngest for not putting the costumes away, we opted for all getting dolled up as characters from The Lord of the Rings. With our youngest bearded and axe-laden as Gimli, our eldest as golden locks Legolas, and our daughter as beautiful Arwen. Due to my height, I took the role of staff wielding Gandolf. Susan opted out due to our need for an official photographer.

Perhaps it was the cultural intelligence level of the neighborhood we canvassed or some minor design flaws, but in receiving us at every door we would get the following..."Oh honey, come look - the Lord of the Rings group!" At this they would discuss the names of each one with accuracy, Legolas, Gimli, Arwen and then there would be a pregnant pause as they surveyed my dress... Jesus?? After three doors with no close responses (Moses, Abraham and "oh my God a Jesus") I joined my wife and the adult chaperones on the street.
