Re: Family "Rallying" Points

Agreed that a road trip can in itself be a rallying point. We've got a similar range of ages here, so music wise, it's not always easy. Often the preferences of the older ones get airtime- they're closer to the dial, or they bring the ipod. I tend to be pretty broad in my taste - so I overlap with everyone, but something I like will annoy everyone (I am alone in appreciation for Arvo Pärt, Chuck Prophet, Mushroom etc.,  so I don't even try these in the car).  But I try to stretch the kids, from the whimsical (Uri Caine, Laura Love) to oldies. And try to stretch myself by learning from the kids.

Books on tape have worked surprisingly well, as have their public radio counterparts on the weekends. We all have gotten into a range of stories--regardless of their official reading level.

Another thing that seems to work is limiting personal electronics even on long trips. Going through to the other side of boredom is possible. Learning to look takes some mental space, a kind of attention rare in childhood in our area.
