Re: In Praise of Gaming

This is great. Thanks, David. It brings to mind a number of things. Here are two:

One, we're a generation raised on Sesame Street . Sesame and its ilk were free from violence and anything deemed emotionally "unsafe"; and also "free" from the supernatural and from any agents of grace: as far as I know, you'd never see a priest, rabbi, etc. in that space. Seems like "sweepin' the clouds away" took away a few other bits. To the extent two which we were raised on this, we need the correction of people who have lived in something larger.

You might get (a stereotype of) the aesthetics of living in the inner city from Sesame, but better would be to read Jane Jacobs, and far better would be to live there for a year. Or more. So please keep posting on raising kids to be brave and responsible.

Two, it reminds me of what Sendak just said in the pre-release interview, which we linked to on the SixSeeds Newswire

What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?

Sendak: I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate.
