A friend adds...

Our friend Greg -- and new contributor (stay tuned!) -- added this to the conversation David and John were having:

I think the pendulum of intense vs. lax little league parents/coaches has now swung too far the other way.  Chuck Klosterman wrote a great piece about this in his book Sex, Drugs and Coco Puffs.  He points out that soccer is very popular among todays parents chiefly because your kid can stink and no one will notice.

Baseball, on the other hand, provides everyone their singular day in court with an "at bat."  Just your kid and your kid alone will face the pitcher.  There is success and there is failure in that at bat--but there is no hiding.  While I can recall a few shameful moments from my youth (2 outs, 2 on...me at the plate...strike three!) I can also recall a few successes (2 on, 2 outs...ball four!!).  I am grateful to have experienced all of it.
