Perfect blend of joy and despair

"Baby steps," I mutter to myself for the fifteenth time as nausea and light headedness overcome my body during my most recent workout with Austan -- a young and overly enthusiastic mixture of personal trainer and drill sergeant.  Austan is determined to get me in shape -- on a recent business trip he actually called the hotel where I was staying to ask about the fitness facilities and surrounding restaurants so he could email me my workouts and tell me what I can and can't eat.  I appreciate his dedication to the cause.  And it's not just me he wants to transform; it's the whole family.

So there we all were together Monday night with Austan, dutifully jumping, squatting, lunging, lifting, running, and commiserating.  Exercising with the whole family has added a new dimension to my workout experience. I now alternate radically between wishing the hour was over and wishing the hour would never end.  It's miserable, humorous, difficult, and ridiculous all at the same time -- a perfect blend of joy and despair.

This is all part of the multi-step Wunderli family plan.  Step 1: workout together.  Step 2: make and eat healthy dinners together. Step 3: study together.  Step 4: serve together.  It seems so basic I wonder why we're not already much better at these steps.  We're just out of shape on a lot of levels.  I blame the move.  In any case, no time like the present to get back in shape.  And it starts with baby steps.
