When is the last time you've gotten a real letter from a friend? "There is no standard nowadays of elegant letter writing, as there used to be in our time." If you think refers to email or texting, you're wrong. It was written about that most horrible of innovations, the postcard.

That's a quote from John Freeman's new book "The Tyranny of E-mail,"  which aims to show how we got to the powerful and problematic social practice of email. Ben Yagoda's recent review shows  just how problematic-- one person's convenience is another's pain point. But, according to Yagoda, Freeman does pass along some good advice for dealing with an out-of-control inbox: "Freeman advises us to limit...how often we check our in-box, to keep a written to-do list, to be careful reading and composing e-mail, and not to 'debate complex or sensitive matters by e-mail.'
