When is the last time you've gotten a real letter from a friend?

If you think refers to email or texting, you're wrong. It was written about that most horrible of innovations, the postcard.
That's a quote from John Freeman's new book "The Tyranny of E-mail," which aims to show how we got to the powerful and problematic social practice of email. Ben Yagoda's recent review shows just how problematic-- one person's convenience is another's pain point. But, according to Yagoda, Freeman does pass along some good advice for dealing with an out-of-control inbox: "Freeman advises us to limit...how often we check our in-box, to keep a written to-do list, to be careful reading and composing e-mail, and not to 'debate complex or sensitive matters by e-mail.' "
