Opening Doors, Removing Excuses

"Poverty is not an excuse for anything," says Carlinhos Brown , the famous Brazilian musician. Easy to say if you're not poor, right? But Brown is talking about his own childhood and the beleaguered neighborhood he grew up in.

And Brown isn't sitting back and lecturing others. He's been instrumental bringing renewal to the neighborhood, starting a music school for local youth, forming a community revitalization association, and in general, reaching out to anyone who would listen. The effects have been profound. How does he do it? "I'm not better or smarter than anyone...But when I find a door closed, I kick the door open."
