New on DVD: Limitless
Only one major release on DVD this week. The good news? It's decent.
Limitless
Action
The Gist: Bradley Cooper plays an underachiever who gets his hands on a new drug. It turns him into a smart, energetic, handsome winner with the intelligence to take over the world. Of course, there are costs to such power, both from his body and from those who really, really, really want to get their hands on it. Read our full review.
The Ups: An interesting premise and a good performance by Cooper make this movie pretty good. As the story unfolds, the world around him becomes more sinister but his ability to fight it becomes greater.
The Downs: The story builds to a philosophical question (Can one truly succeed by taking shortcuts?), but then abandons the question in a maze of action chases. Thus, the ending feels out of tone with the rest of the movie. Sadly, I really liked the rest of the movie and wished they had followed it through.
The Verdict: Watch it. It’s good for an evening’s entertainment. Even with the unsatisfying ending, it makes you think while entertaining.
Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for thematic drug use, violence and disturbing images, and sexuality. The most disturbing image involves desperately drinking blood. But the PG-13 rating is appropriate and it will be appropriate for older teens. Please note: I haven't seen the extended version.
