New on DVD: Three Duds
The Rite, The Mechanic, and The Roommate are out on DVD this week. Are any worth your time?
The Rite
Horror
The Gist: A young, conflicted priest learns from an older, conflicted priest about exorcism. The young priest is skeptical, the older is an exorcism expert. Sure enough, a demon shows up who’s just begging to be exorcised.
The Ups: Made with the teachings of the Catholic Church in mind, this movie follows traditional Christian teaching about the supernatural pretty closely.
The Downs: If you’re a horror movie fan, it’s just not scary enough or and doesn’t offer anything new. If you’re not, it’s way too scary.
The Verdict: Skip it.
Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for thematic material, violence, frightening images, and language including sexual references.
The Mechanic
Action
The Gist: A mechanic doesn’t fix your car. In this case, the word is code for an assassin. He’s hired to fix things….permanently. But this time the mechanic (Jason Stathum) has a personal stake in the mission. He’s out for revenge, which we all know is bad juju for a mechanic, either the car kind or the killing kind.
The Ups: Lots of mindless action and big guns. Explosions. Jack knifing semis. More explosions.
The Downs: See The Ups.
The Verdict: It’s a good movie to rent or watch on demand. Fun for an evening entertainment, it just wasn’t worth seeing in the theater.
Be Aware: Rated R for strong, brutal violence throughout, language, some sexual content, and nudity.
The Roommate
Horror
The Gist: One pretty, sexy girl feels lucky to have found another pretty, sexy girl to be her college roommate. That is, until the roommate starts acting all weird and creepy and stuff.
The Ups: You didn’t go to this college or date either of these girls.
The Downs: Where to begin? So very bad in acting, writing, and general existing. Even its attempt at inappropriate sexual titillation falls flat. A complete rip-off of other movies like Single White Female, except that’s like saying a comic book is a rip off of Mark Twain. The film is devoid of all charm, suspense, and interest. Just say no.
Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for violence and menace, some sexual content, language, and teen partying.
