New on DVD: Green Hornet

The Green Hornet

Comedy

The Gist: Seth Rogan plays an entitled, rich brat who decides to act like a superhero, mostly for the fame. He also loves the cool toys and awesome car.  He doesn’t want to do any actual fighting or, you know, work. He leaves that to his sidekick Kato (Jay Chou) and his smart, hot secretary Lenore (Cameron Diaz). Read our full review.

The Ups: The movie works best when Rogan riffs on his unique slacker sense of humor.

The Downs: The plot comes and goes, never particularly engaging. While earning a PG-13 rating by staying away from the really bad words, the movie is chock full of crude slang and references to sexual situations. It also strongly implies, but doesn’t show on screen, a lifestyle of playboy casual sex. As superheroes, the characters are never truly interested in justice, but aren’t quite set up as satire either.

The Verdict: Adults who don’t mind rude humor will get a few laughs. Everyone else should skip it.

Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for sequences of violent action, language, sensuality and drug content. In my opinion, the film should have carried an R rating.
