New on DVD: Jackass 3D (ouch) and Morning Glory (perky)

Looking for something new to watch on DVD? Maybe you should go back and watch "The Social Network" again.

Jackass 3D

Comedy

The Gist: Grown men who should know better do ill-advised stunts. If it lands them in the hospital, that’s just another thing at which to snicker. If it renders them unable to have children, not only do we snicker, but consider that a good thing for humanity.

The Ups: Dude, so he strapped himself to a freakin’ rocket and then, like, totally put on roller skates and, like lit the rocket and totally BIFFED. It was freakin’ awesome. Soooo funny.

The Downs: See the ups.

The Verdict: Heck, no. But then again, I’m the wrong gender. For some reason, this series of movies and the accompanying TV show have a market. Let’s call them…men. Men and boys. I bring it to your attention so you will know what it’s about.

Be Aware: Inane, limb-risking stunts aren’t funny unless there’s vulgarity involved. There’s lots of vulgarity. R for male nudity, extremely crude and dangerous stunts throughout, and for language

Morning Glory

Comedy

The Gist: A young, relentlessly perky TV producer (Rachael McAdams) is tapped for the big job: managing the morning info-news program for a major network. She finds the egos are huge and the ratings small.

The Ups: Harrison Ford is pretty good as a grizzled real reporter forced into morning news by his contract. Diane Keaton plays the long-suffering and borderline insane news diva of the show. They both deliver some laughs.

The Downs: Some people can take perkiness and some can’t. Those who can’t should steer far, far away from this movie. It also suffers from another problem: the audience never really buys into caring whether the morning news program succeeds or not. They’re probably too busy checking Twitter and Al Jazeera online.

The Verdict: Skip it.

Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for some sexual content including dialog, language and brief drug content. Although it’s not graphically portrayed, the story line features a love story that becomes sexual.
