New on DVD: Sorcerer's Apprentice and Twilight: Eclipse
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Children's Thriller
The Gist: A troubled young man breaks a jar and meets two ancient sorcerers, students of Merlin, who were trapped for eons. Could he be the one who will finally step into Merlin's place and win the war against the evil sorceress Morgana? Read our full review.
The Ups: This film's genesis is the dancing mop scene from Disney's "Fantasia." It's a lot of fun to reimagine the scene. Jay Baruchel as the sorcerer and Nicolas Cage as the older wizard both put in some fine performances. With the film's fun script, they make an enjoyable, if forgettable, movie.
The Downs: Some scenes will be too intense for younger viewers.
The Verdict: Rent it. It's a solid family film. Not the best you'll ever see, but still enjoyable.
Be Aware: Rated PG for fantasy action violence, the film has a few mildly intense scenes. It does depict sorcery, some of it dark, so be aware of that if you're a no-wizard kind of family.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Teen Vampire Romance - releasing Saturday, Dec 4
The Gist: Bella and her dreamboat vampire Edward are reunited and spend sun-dappled afternoons kissing in wildflower meadows. But perpetually shirtless werewolf Jacob Black wants to have another go at winning Bella's heart. Plus, a gang of vampires are coming after Bella. Will she survive to choose between the two supernatural heartthrobs? Read our full review.
The Ups: Despite their intense passion, Bella and Edward are chaste. So are Bella and Jacob.
The Downs: Anyone who knows me knows I have a problem with Bella completely subjecting her personality and future to Edward and their love. Go to law school, Bella! Do something you care about, and then see if your passion for Edward is still there when you're grown.
The Verdict: Rent it, if only to placate your daughters. Discuss with them the characteristics of real love. Is obsession love? Or is there more to it than that?
