New On DVD: Oceans and Women

What's new this week on DVD? We'll break it down.

Oceans

Family Documentary

The Gist: A documentary about the great deeps narrated by Pierce Brosnan, this film tries to encompass the mysteries of the world's seas, from tiny jellyfish to fantastic whales.

The Ups: Magnificent and awe inspiring creatures fill the screen, more than ready for their close up. A few will send a shiver down your spine.

The Downs: It seems it's impossible to have a nature documentary without some boring preaching about saving the environment and how mean we humans are to the cuddly polar bears and playful dolphins.

The Verdict: Watch it with your kids. You'll both be entranced and find new things at which to marvel. Read our full review here.

Be Aware: Rated G, this film stays away from most predatory violence and awkward reproduction sequences.

The Chat with Kids: Would you like to swim with sharks or whales? Would you like to study the ocean? How cool is it that there are things we still don't know about our own planet?

Please Give

Drama

The Gist: A New York family pays the bills by buying and selling the artifacts of deceased peoples' lives. As they endure middle age, she questions their life while he toys with an affair.

The Ups: Good acting and an insightful script will draw you into this quiet everyday drama.

The Downs: No explosions. Seriously, this is an estrogen-heavy film.

The Verdict: Rent it. If you like well-acted films that ask tough questions, you'll love this movie. Read our review and interview with the director.

Be Aware:  Rated R for language, sexual content, and nudity, this is a film for adults about what it means to be an adult.
