New on DVD: Dragons and Hexes

How to Train Your Dragon

Animated Children's movie

The Gist: Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) comes from a long line of manly-men Vikings who live to fight dragons. So why is Hiccup so scrawny? And how is it that his best friend is the scariest dragon of all?

The Ups: Magnificent animation, a sweet story, and crisp characters add up to a lot of laughs and a lot of heart. Plus, it has a nice love story between a son and father who love each other but don't understand each other. They got it right on this one.

The Downs: No downs. This is one of the best children's movies of the year.

The Verdict: Rent it. You'll love it and your kids will too. Read our full review and interview with the writing and directing team.

Be Aware: Rated PG, this film is appropriate for all but the smallest kids and yet keeps your attention.

The Chat: Is it ok to be different than your parents? How is Hiccup brave? How is his dad brave?

Jonah Hex

Comic book Adaptation

The Gist: He's a scar faced bounty hunter, still cranky about the murder of his family. Oh, and he talks to dead people. She's a good-time gal who can't afford enough clothes to cover her cleavage. Oh, and she’s former it-girl turned has been Megan Fox. Together, they work to stop a post-Civil War attack on Washington and make someone pay.

The Ups: Josh Brolin, at least, shows up and does a fair bit of acting.

The Downs: Who's gonna pay? You are, if you watch this hex of a movie. All the explosions in the world can't cover the lack of story, acting, excitement, or the weirdness of the anachronistic terrorist plot.

The Verdict: Run. Run quickly away.

Be Aware: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, disturbing images and sexual content.
