Robin Hood
Drama
The Gist: Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) is just an ordinary mule in King Richard’s army until Richard dies on the battlefield. Making his way back to England, along with a few not-so-merry friends, Robin seizes the opportunity to assume the identity of a deceased nobleman and the affection of his lovely widow, Marion (Cate Blanchett). The dastardly Godfrey takes advantage of the new, weak king to pillage the countryside and set up a French invasion. Who’s to stop him? One guess…a legend in the making…could it be Robin (Longstride) Hood?
The Ups: No green tights.
The Downs: In attempting to ground the legend in a time and place, the film removes everything that was fun about Robin Hood. No merry men. Hardly any Friar Tuck. Not nearly enough outfoxing the Sherriff of Nottingham. And barely any stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Really, what’s the point? Lots of arrows fly, but your pulse never starts to pound.
The Verdict: Skip it. This film was a disappointment from start to finish. Read our full review here.
Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for violence including intense sequences of warfare, and some sexual content. Also rated “B” for boring.
