New on DVD: Persia, Italy, and Glee
What's new on the DVD aisle? Anything the family can watch together?
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Action
The Gist: There's this dagger, see? And it can stop, freeze, reverse time, see? It's up to an adopted prince and a spunky princess to rescue it and the world from the clutches of a power-hungry would-be dictator.
The Ups: Just mindless fun that the family can enjoy together. Read our full review here.
The Downs: Did I mention mindless?
The Verdict: Rent it. It's not the best movie you'll ever see. Not the second best. Not even the hundredth best. But it's fun.
Be Aware: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. I have to disagree with the MPAA. It's not that intense. This film is one you can watch with your kids.
Letters to Juliet
Romance
The Gist: A pretty girl in pretty Verona, Italy answers an old love letter. Could it be the key to finding love herself? Could Italy be any more beautiful?
The Ups: Did I mention it's pretty? The movie plays like a travelogue and star Amanda Seyfried fits right in.
The Downs: If you're looking for complexity or insight, look elsewhere. This is a soft focus romance that feels good but offers little more.
The Verdict: Depends. If mushy romance is your thing, you'll love it. Double points to husbands and boyfriends who love their women enough to sit with them.
Be Aware: PG for brief rude behavior and sensual images, some language and incidental smoking.
TV on DVD: Glee Season 1
The Gist: The Glee club is popular again! High school kids and their teachers live melodramatic lives and punctuate them with catchy arrangements of pop songs as they compete in Glee Club contests.
The Ups: The music is gonna get you. It's nearly impossible to sit through an episode of Glee without wanting to sing (and dance) along. Who can help but root for the group of misfits with big hearts and loud pipes?
The Downs: Very adult themes involving teen pregnancy, sexuality, homosexuality, and other "alities" require adult guidance for kids to navigate.
The Verdict: This show has swept the nation. It's the "M*A*S*H*" or "Friends" of the 2010s. It's enjoyable at times and cringe-inducing at times. However, it's a good idea for parents to be aware of it. Your kids are.
