New On DVD: Miley Tears and Furry Fears

What's new on DVD this week? Not much, unfortunately. Here's your rundown:

The Last Song

drama

The Gist: Miley Cyrus stars in her first big girl movie as a disaffected teen sent to stay with her father for the summer. It's not all bad. He has a big, beautiful house on the beach. There's a cute and sensitive lifeguard. Life could be a lot worse. This film being a Nicholas Sparks creation, you know that it's about to get worse. There's a reason it's called The LAST Song. Read our review and interview with Nicholas Sparks here.

The Ups: Some stunning beach scenes and a chaste romance make it an acceptable film for tween girls needing to get their cry on.

The Downs: The tearjerky storyline and overemotive moments add up to a high dose of sappiness. Miley, while we love her, struggles in the role.

The Verdict: Watch it with your tween. It's not the best film you'll ever see, but it's sweet.

Be Aware: Rated PG for thematic material, some violence, sensuality, and mild language.

Furry Vengeance

family comedy

The Gist: Brendan Fraser plays a land developer who plans to take out a forest full of cute, furry creatures. The creatures fight back. Yuk, yuk. No really, yuck.

The Ups: There are no ups.

The Downs: You know what would be more fun for the family than this film? A four day road trip in an unairconditioned car with no portable electronics. With the flu.

The Verdict: Run, hide, move to Mongolia if you have to. Don't watch it.

Be Aware: Rated PG for some rude humor, mild language, and brief smoking.
