New on DVD: The Good Book and Naughty Teens

What has Hollywood served up for your DVD viewing pleasure this week? We break down what's new on the DVD aisle.

The Book of Eli

Action

The Gist: The apocalypse has come and gone. One man (Denzel Washington) carries a precious book, in fact the last surviving copy of the Good Book, shielding it from violent and evil men with bad teeth. He carries a sharp sword and profound words. Read our full review.

The Ups: Washington plays the wise tough guy well. There are twist and turns in this film that you don't see coming. That's a good thing. Faith plays a big role in the movie. Again, that's a good thing.

The Downs: Apparently, post apocalypse means frizzy hair and round aviator goggles. And leather. Lots of leather.

The Verdict: Rent it. This film is different than 90% of what Hollywood churns out. Its respectful treatment of faith, without being sappy, feels extremely refreshing.

Be Aware: Rated R for brutal violence and language, this film isn't gentle. IMDB Parents Guide.

Youth In Revolt

teen comedy

The Gist: Michael Cera (Juno, Arrested Development) plays yet another teen with a mission. To lose his virginity. Didn't we see this movie already? He creates what he imagines is a smooth, urbane alter-ego with the confidence to pursue the ladies.

The Ups: If you enjoy Michael Cera, well, here's another instalment of the awkward Cera coming of age story. It's funny at times.

The Downs: This is one of those teen comedies that teens really shouldn't watch. Chock full of bad language, drug references, and tons of sexual discussions and situations, it'll give your kids an education way faster than in Family Life class.

The Verdict: Skip it.

Be Aware: Rated R for sexual content, language and drug use. IMDB Parents Guide.
