Congratulations to Tamara Sandlin of Denton,Texas for winning this week's book giveaway!  While this contest is now closed, please come back to SixSeeds for more giveaways for good, family, fun!

At SixSeeds, we believe in the power of a good story... even the books our small children are hearing and reading.  Stories have an amazing power to move, inspire, and sometimes even transform lives... even young lives. This week, we take a popular kids' book and examine it. Hopefully, the next time you're browsing though a crowded bookstore...  you can choose wisely!

Are you enamored with dinosaurs – or are you raising a budding paleontologist, perhaps? Does the relationship between the sea turtle and its prehistoric ancestors tickle your fancy?  If so, you might enjoy Kurt Cyrus’s newest book, The Voyage of Turtle Rex.

In the pages of this book, a female turtle, Rex, hatches on a primeval beach, journeys in the dark sea, dodges plesiosaurs and finds solace in the entangling seaweed.

Time, like a turtle, passed silently by,

Stirring the sea, swirling the sky.

The hatchling who hid in the seaweed was gone …

Grown to a two-ton Archelon.

She glided past plesiosaurs, calm as you please.

She swam with the sharks under rolling seas.

As her plight continues, the little prehistoric hatchling-turned-adult lays eggs, reminding the reader that the rhythms of life are consistent through the ages, even though:

Gone is that sea and the creatures it knew.  Arcehlon. Mosasaur. Pterosaur, too.  Gone is the plesiosaur’s clam-cracking smile… but full-body helmets are still in style.”

The Bottom Line:

Kurt Cyrus has written and illustrated nearly twenty books for kids, intertwining poetry and science into fascinating tales sure to score with teachers and the kiddos.

To Talk To Your Kids About:

Quite possibly … your children know more about dinosaurs than you. So this one may just prompt the kiddos to teach you a thing or two. So, sit back and delight in their childlike amazement.
