At SixSeeds, we believe in the power of a good story.  The books our children are hearing and reading will move, inspire, and sometimes even shape their lives... even young lives. This week, we take a popular kids' book and examine it. Hopefully, the next time you're browsing though a crowded bookstore, our reviews will help you sort through the thousands of titles…  and you can choose wisely!

Have a little one who finds it difficult to be away from Mom or Dad? Anna Dewdney has written a series of three rhyming books featuring young Llama llama and his mom. In “Llama Llama Red Pajama, little Llama llama is having a tough time going to bed. He starts out slightly pouty and works himself into a full blown fit while mom is downstairs doing the dishes and talking on the phone.

The illustrations are vibrant and almost tell the story without the words. By the time Mama llama makes her way to her son, he is screaming for her so loudly you can see his tonsils. She responds:

Baby llama,
What a tizzy!
Sometimes Mama’s
Very busy.

Please stop all this
Llama drama

And be patient
For your mama.

This fun, yet endearing story ends with a peaceful sleeping child who is alone.  Before two good night kisses, Mama reminds Llama llama :

Mama Llama’s
Always near,
Even if she’s
Not right here.

Things To Talk to Your Kids About:

Even if you don’t fully agree with the way Mom handles Llama, this book broaches a subject almost every parent of children will encounter at some point.  For those with children just starting school, the author has also written a similar book, “Llama llama Misses Mama.”

For Mom and Dad to Consider:

Dewdney offers a playful and helpful reminder that the answer to separation woes does not lie in parents never being apart from their children, but rather in the security of loving and faithful parents.

Since we received this book many years ago as part of the Imagination Library, it has been one of our FAVORITES!!!!! Our boys (now 11 years old) loved it - especially the illustration of Baby Llama in his tizzy - and our 5 year old has come to enjoy it as well. The rhyming is lovely and fun, and Dewdney firmly captures the feelings of both Mama and Baby Llama.

We even used it as a Christmas gift for our boys' 2nd grade teacher. As room mother that year, I collected money for her gift, but instead of buying a trinket or gift card, we bought 3/4 of a llama through Heifer International, which was a favorite charity of their teacher. We gave her the book as a concrete reminder of the folks we helped in her honor that year. Lots of special memories attached to "Llama Llama Red Pajama".

This book's message would be applicable for my 8 year old, who likes to get out of bed because "she can't sleep." Thanks for the fun review!
