Derek and Kat live in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where Derek serves as a Connecting Pastor at a local church and Kat works in marketing for a medical center. They have been married nearly five years and feel blessed that God has chosen them to adopt.
When/why did you decide to adopt?
The simple answer: God wanted us to. For several years, we felt that adoption was His plan to complete our family. After putting complete faith in Him to guide us along this path filled with financial mountains and emotional uncertainties, we began our paperwork in January 2010. We have since received the referrals of biological siblings in Russia and have traveled once to meet them. Our hearts are yearning for the day we can return to them and eventually bring them home.
Do you have any biological children?
No, we do not.
Whom are you adopting, and from where?
We are adopting biological siblings from Russia. The children, each placed in different orphanages shortly after they were born, have not yet met. The day we are able to pick them up will truly be the day all four of us are brought together as a "forever family."
When are you hoping to have your child home?
We recently returned from our first of three visits to Russia. We hope to have them home by Christmas!
What is your biggest apprehension about the process?
Truth be told, the financial burden has been our largest hurdle. We have been debt free (aside from our home mortgage) for the last several years, and have each taken on second jobs to help pay for the costs associated with bringing our children home. While this may not be the easiest journey to form a family, we feel confident that it is the path meant for us.
What has been the most surprising aspect of the process?
The love and support shown to us by our friends and family has completely blown us away! Of course the amount of love in our hearts for these two beautiful children is immeasurable already, but to witness how much our friends love them before ever meeting them is truly amazing. We are honored to be blessed with such wonderful people in our lives.
We also were surprised with how much we fell in love with Russia. We feel the country has already been ingrained into our family heritage.
Have you and your spouse always been on the same page about wanting to adopt? (If not, what changed?) How did you tell your other children (if applicable) and families?
Since the seed of adoption was planted in our hearts years ago, we have been on the same page. Our familes have been very supportive of the adoption since we told them nearly a year ago.
Is any organization or agency helping you to get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?
We are working with an international adoption placement agency that has helped us arrange our mountains of needed paperwork, court preparations and travel. Our friends have helped us coordinate a yard sale and other fund-raising activities.
