Our kids always knew we wanted to bring home more children through adoption. So telling them was just so easy, mainly because they expected it. I think it was “you have a new sister waiting for you in China!”
Please tell us about yourself — your location, job, etc!
We live in Texas about an hour north of Dallas in a small town by the name of Krum. My husband works in the D/FW metroplex as an elevator adjuster/foreman for Schindler Elevator Company. I am a stay-at-home mother of three (soon to be four!). In the beginning of June 2010, I was honored to become the Human Resources Director of An Orphan's Wish, a charity that cares for special needs children in China.
When/why did you decide to adopt?
We first adopted back in November of 2007. Since bringing our son, John, home we have many times talked about bringing home another child from China. It was this summer that we fell in love with a little girl and decided that yes, we were definitely going to do this again. We adopt for several reasons. First, because we are Christians, we feel the call to take care of the orphans just as our Lord commands. Secondly, we are unable to have any more children, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want more children! Adoption is the best option for us.
Do you have any biological children?
Yes, we have two. Kaden is 11 and Madeline is 8.
Whom are you adopting, and from where?
We are adopting Liu Man Yu. She is 7 years old right now and waiting for us in Chongqing China.
When are you hoping to have your child home?
We are hoping for early summer but who knows when we will actually travel. The wait is unpredictable!
What is your biggest apprehension about the process?
There really isn’t anything about the process that we are apprehensive about. We are nervous that our newest daughter won’t want us or love us because she will be leaving her foster family of almost 5 years.
What has been the most surprising aspect of the process?
How easily we fell in love with a picture and a name ;) Also, the negative response from some people/family members when we tell them we are adopting. I can’t imagine NOT adopting and they can’t IMAGINE adopting.
Have you and your spouse always been on the same page about wanting to adopt? (If not, what changed?)
No, we haven’t. After we brought John home, there were many unexpected hurdles. Severe neglect, severe malnutrition, failure to thrive, rickets, and serious attachment disorders. It has been a hard 2 ½ years with John. Many times I was ready, but my husband was not. It wasn’t until he saw Duo Duo’s face this past July that he said yes. When we lost her file, we were heartbroken. Even though we only knew her name, we already loved her and couldn’t wait to bring her home. We are certain though, that God used her little face to draw my husband’s heart, once again, to adopt. Although we won’t get to be her parents, we won’t ever forget that it was her face that started us on this journey again.
How did you tell your other children (if applicable) and families?

Is any organization or agency helping you to get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?
We were awarded a grant through the Bowen Zacapa England adoption grant in the beginning of our paperwork. It was a blessing to have this help financially to get us started! Emotionally, we rely on our Father for wisdom to walk us through adopting. But many, many times, He places people in our paths to encourage us too. Many times we will receive comments/posts/emails from random people encouraging us through this journey.

Our kids always knew we wanted to bring home more children through adoption. So telling them was just so easy, mainly because they expected it. I think it was “you have a new sister waiting for you in China!”
