Adoption: The Christopher Family

Tell us about yourself, spouse where you live what you  do ect.

We are Kerry and Desiree Christopher, married 16 years originally from Ohio but now in Northern VA.

I am a happy stay at home mom, Kerry works in Public Relations.  We have six children ranging in age from 14 down to 1.

When, why did you decide to adopt?

We have always wanted to adopt. We had a difficult time trying to get pregnant and had researched adoption before our first child was born. We knew that some day regardless of how many biological children we had we would adopt from China.

Do you have bio children?

Yes, we have three. Hannah is 14, Caleb is 12 and Jake is 10.

Whom did you adopt and from where?

We adopted Hope from China's special needs program in September 2006, Grace also from the special needs program in August 2008 and Rachel in July of 2010. We would love to adopt from China again some day. There are so many children that need families.

What was their given name and did you rename them, why?

Hope was named Wu Feng Mei, Grace Xin Jei and Rachel was Wei Shu Fei. We did keep part of their Chinese names as their middle name. We believe this is an important part of who they are and will some day appreciate that we kept a small part of their Chinese heritage. Our middle daughter also prefers to be called by her Chinese name.

What has been the most surprising aspect of adoption?

How easy it was to accept and love a child not born to me. I had instant love for my daughter's the moment they were placed in my arms.

What has been the most disappointing?

Family not understanding why we would adopt.

What has been the most gratifying?

Our biological children's ability to love and accept our adopted children as siblings with no questions asked. It was instant for them as well. I know it isn't always like this, adding to a family who already has children, but for us we just gelled.

Did any agency, organization or family help you get through the process emotionally, financially or other wise?

All of our agencies were very helpful and supportive, which is very important.  Without the support of an agency you really have no clue what is going on in an international adoption.

We also used Kingdom Kids adoption ministries to help raise money for our adoption fees.

What advice would you give others who are thinking about adoption?

Just jump in. It is so worth it. The rewards of adopting a child who needs you is immense.  But, do research and connect with other's who are going through the same process. You will need emotional support.

You might also try keeping a blog, it helps to chronicle your journey. Plus the online community can be a huge support.

 We do keep a blog.

Wonderful article! We are also completing our third adoption from the China special needs program. I agree with the fact that it has been disappointing when family members do not understand why we are adopting. It's been very frustrating for our family.

Well said, Desiree! I agree with everything you wrote. Every child deserves to be loved and though the adoption process is not always an easy one...it is so worth the reward! What little sacrifice on our behalf to give a child a home. Too many children sit year after year in an orphanage...never knowing the love of a family.

If the age limit for adoptive parents were higher, we would be going back for another special needs child. As it is, we are only able to help by sponsoring children for foster care and helping other families bring their little ones home.

We to are a family who have adopted from China, we have three children, two who are SN. Couldn't imagine our life without our beautiful treasures. We too understand how hard it is for others to understand why we adopt. Yes the cost is high but these children deserve loving homes. Blessings!

I have always been a bit envious when hearing stories of how parents just fell in love with their child the instant they were placed into their arms. Man that would be nice! I gave myself a very VERY hard time when we adopted our son from China in 2007 because I did NOT feel that way. I felt a good deal MORE like I was babysitting someone ELSE's child and wondering when they were going to come get him!
My husband helped me to think back and I realized that I'd experienced the same feelings with our biological children too. Love came with time...one day at a time. Love ALWAYS began for me as a choice and then the feelings followed.
I just wanted to say this in case anyone else is reading and struggling with guilt feelings. We just brought home our fourth child...2nd one from China and I am SO glad I have learned the love lesson already or I would be devastated!
Love often comes softly :)
Thanks for sharing and for blessing Liliana!

Mabel,
You answered your own question. "Jesus is the Provider". It isn't about what we think is possible based on what we see (being a realist). It is about faith in what He can do...based on what we do not see. The bigger your bucket of faith, the more blessings that can rain down upon you. We are called to adopt these childen. It is something we pray about before stepping foward in the faith that He will provide all that we need versus all that we want.

Mabel,
There are many many hoops to jump through when adopting. Every corner of your life is examined by local, state and federal government and if it is international adoption, by the foreign government as well. One of the things they look very closely at is if you can afford to provide for another child. If one income was not adequate to care for another child Deseree would never have been approved for another child. I hope this helps put your mind at ease.

Our family has been blessed by domestic foster care adoption and we are now on the journey of international adoption. As an adopted individual myself, I'd like to say (from the other side of the fence) that nothing induces a more grateful state of mind than to know the pure and selfless devotion it takes to both put a child up for adoption as well as take them in, agreeing to help someone for the rest of your life is a monumental and absolute good that should be sullied by none.

We have been blessed with six children, one has gone to heaven, five remain home. There is no greater gift than that of a child. It does not take a genetic link to form a family-it takes time, love, nurturing, forgivness and a belief in something greater than yourself. We have never been able to say we are done building our family. Adoption somehow wraps itself around your heart and gives so much back to you, just as in those very special moments you say for the first time I am pregnant, or you hear it's a boy or it's a girl, just like it does when you first realize that this child you care for is worth more than anything else in this world...that love that wraps around your soul and forever changes you, is the love that has been given to us to share with the world

Our lives have been touched by adoptions from China. Some very good friends of ours who are Chinese-Caucasian mixed marriage like my husband and I were blessed with four biological sons. After five years of saving & fundraisers held by family and friends. All six of them traveled to China to meet there new daughter/sister Kinley. She is such a blessing to their family and the friendliest little girl I know and just entered kindergarten. I had the pleasure of being the transitional kindergarten teacher for three of her brothers but retired before she was ready so I went through all my old curriculum and made her a huge "homework" box so she could do her homework with all her big brothers. I was selling
bows and a cheer competition and she came running over to say "hi" auntie. Kinley had a blast filling up her bag with bows...she's so cute I couldn't charge her mom so she was my bow model all day. Many blessing to all of you who give these children a better life and blessings to the children who enrich our lives.

I will never understand why 'family' and others do not understand and support these amazing adoptions?!?! Its plain ignorance and more education may help open their hearts. I feel for you and please as difficult it may be, please never allow nonsupport from family bring you down. You know in your hearts and in GOD'S heart that you are blessing these babies and providing them with a family of their very own, and unconditional love & acceptance.

Safe travels bringing your Baby Love, Lilliana HOME!!!! : )

Way to go six seeds - and what great things you had to report in response to the questions! Surprisingly - we to share the confusing response from our extended family in regard to our adoptions! And yeah - the bio kids open acceptance of their siblings just makes my heart sing - but we never expected the open embrace from the 'greater adoption family' either!!

I grew up in a similar family- I one of four biokids and then we adopted my four sisters from Asian countries (and one goes by her name of origin too). I am incredibly thankful for my family- and I think it helped me be more open minded and compassionate too. So of course I had to adopt internationally as well:) My dd came home from China and was welcomed with open arms by our now Asian-American family.

We had 3 bio kids and then adopted virtual twins from Vietnam.Adoption was the best thing that ever happened to us. Always knew I would adopt but Husband needed some time to realize. He just told me tonight it was the most profound, greatest thing he has ever done. It is amazing how we could not possibly love these kids anymore if they had been born to us. We are starting the adoption process again very soon when I can get some funds together. We were very surprised and disappointed by the behavior and treatment of our children by a few family members very close to us. They definitely treat them different and we have repeatedly let them know it is NOT acceptable and will not be tolerated. I never dreamed we would encounter this problem. It is not an easy situation to deal with. Here's to wishing you luck with all your future adoptions from someone who loves large families.
