Adoption: The Held Family

Please tell us about yourself — your location, job, etc!
We are Debbie and James Held. We live in North Ogden, Utah. I am a stay at home Mom. James works away in England as a Sales Rep. We have 3 wonderful children, ages 17, 13 and 2 years old. We love to travel and experience new cultures. We enjoy doing things as a family. It can be playing games, going on outings or taking a trip to the lake where we all love to go out on the wave runner.

When/why did you decide to adopt?

Adoption is wonderful. We have been able to build our family through adoption. We already knew that we would adopt again, even before we picked up our baby son from Ethiopia last year. We felt a great desire to go back and so began the process some months after returning home.

Whom are you adopting, and from where?

We are hoping for a baby girl from Ethiopia.

When are you hoping to have your child home?

We’re not sure exactly when we’ll get to bring our baby home but have been told, hopefully close to the spring.

What is your biggest apprehension about the process?

I think for us, the biggest apprehension about the process is that adoption can be so unpredictable. Changes happen along the way, changes that we have no control over. It can really be a rollercoaster ride. You just have to hold on tight and know that it will happen. The rewards are immeasurable.  

Have you and your spouse always been on the same page about wanting to adopt? (If not, what changed?) How did you tell your other children (if applicable) and families?

My husband and I have always been on the same page about wanting to adopt. It’s definitely a very important factor.  Before we started the process to adopt our little boy we talked with our 2 older children about it. We asked them how they felt about us adopting. They were really excited and very, very positive. Luckily for us everyone in our extended family has had such a positive and supportive attitude.

Is any organization or agency helping you to get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?

We signed with Wasatch International Adoptions here in Utah for our adoption.  We have gained really useful knowledge and support from a wonderful on-line adoption group.  At the moment we are at the waiting stage. It can be difficult at times but we’re enjoying every moment with our little one.
