Adoption: The Couch Family

+ enlarge 1 of 1
The Couches are a very talented family, and they're growing... by one more!
The Couches are a very talented family, and they're growing... by one more!

Please tell us about yourself — your location, job, etc!

We live in Middle Tennessee.  Montie is a self-employed carpenter.  Sallee is a home maker and home school mom (and currently sewing  like crazy for our adoption fund!) We've been married for 20 years and have five children, two adopted from Ethiopia.

When/why did you decide to adopt?

Sallee: I always thought I'd have a little girl from China.  I thought, as a very young girl, that I'd have children like the song Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World.  The Lord clearly directed us to Ethiopia, after we were privileged to serve on a mission trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2004. After Gabriel was born (and because of very hard pregnancies)... we said that was our family. But the Lord put adoption on our hearts and through His provision made it possible

Montie: I knew pretty much after we got back from the mission trip to Ethiopia.

Do you have any biological children?

Adeline and Madison (twin girls) are almost Seventeen years old and our son, Gabriel, is twelve.

Whom did you adopt, and from where?

Esther, Ethiopia  (2006)

Solomon, Ethiopia (2008)

In process, right now, of waiting for court dates for little Samson Jude!

What was their name, and did you rename them? Why or why not?

We kept the Ethiopian names, as the middle names of Esther Yordanos

And Solomon Natnael.  Samson Jude will keep his Ethiopian name as his first name.

We just wanted to keep these because these were their given names from their birth country.

What has been the most surprising aspect of adoption?

The Lord has a way of providing the exact amount of money, patience, and endurance (as the journey is LONG.)  There were also twists He led us through to bring just the child He had chosen for our family!

We love our adopted children, just as we do our bio children... it's not different at all. They are just as much as a part of us as the ones born to us.

What has been the most disappointing?

Lack of control of really anything in the journey! There is also the time element -especially when you 'have' your child identified and you wait excessively on the 'politics' of the process. It’s like being pregnant without a due date.

Once you go to get your child, it's most disappointing to see all of the other orphans… it makes you want to bring them ALL home.

What has been the most gratifying?

Not getting fat! lol

It's a picture of salvation that's lived out through adoption- the gospel.

Did any organization or agency really help you get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?

Our church, our friends, and some family helped financially and emotionally (and with words of encouragement.)

Show Hope- financially

Katelyn's Fund- through finances and encouragment (by staying in touch and praying)

Lifesong for Orphans-- through a matching grant

What advice would you give people who are considering adoption?

Don't let the financial fear get in the way of His call.

Don't let others' horror stories sway you.

Get ready for the ride, but if He has called you to the journey of adoption ... He will see you through. It's just not always as you think it will be or should be.

We love Poppy Dip and the Couch families heart and passion for adoption. Our family adopted a 7 year old girl from Ethiopia about 6 months ago and I can relate to everything that Sallee says. It is a journey that will forever change your world and the world of others! I am always amazed at how many people I come into contact with who are affected by adoption. It is a much larger community than I ever dreamed. Blessings Couch Family on your journey to Samson!

Our daughter has twirled around in several of the wonderful Poppy Dip dresses and twirls. While our family has not adopted a child of our own, we have supported and prayed through the process for many of our friends. We have loved how the Poppy Dip twirls have prompted others to ask about where they came from and how answering them naturally leads to opening the door to share the picture of adoption, our hearts for orphans, and how one by one we can make a difference for these children in the name of Christ! We've led several to the ItsPoppyDip, and we are so thankful for not only the heart of the Couch family for the children of Ethiopia, but their willingness to continue to share their story through the internet!

Your family reflects what a family should be to everyone in all that you do!
We are also in the adoption process for twin girls from Ethiopia, and have adopted before also.
Thank you for your loving home for these little ones who have none.

Praise the Lord for He funds what He Favors! I loved what you said about how he provided the exact amount needed! We've been blessed in this as well!! For anyone that is allowing money to be the stopper just trust in the Lord with all your heart and with prayer and faith alone He will come through if He has called you to adopt! He loves His children and places the lonely in families!!!!

So, so true. We started our adoption journey with basically no money! God provided down to the day every single time, in small and HUGE ways! Don't let that fear get in the way!
Emotionally-I look back and think, "How did I DO that?!?!" He gave us everything we need when we needed it! An amazing journey into his provision in all things! Congratulations!

Loved reading through the interview. And LOVE this family!! Like another commenter stated, Sallee's PoppyDip skirts and dresses have been more than a fun fashion statement, but also an open door opportunity to share about the miracle of adoption. Our Khloe, whom we brought home from China in May of this year, has been a walking advertisement for ItsPoppyDip and we are always happy to direct people her way, while taking the opportunity to share about Sallee's and Montie's own family and heart for adoption.

God bless you Couch family! We can't wait to see lil' Samson Jude in your arms!

Sallee: I started out the exact same way! I totally thought I would adopt a little girl from China. Guatemala wasn't even on my radar. Africa was but I didn't think I would actually get to adopt from there and GO THERE! Amazing how God works...weaving families together from loss and heartache into love. Couch family, I remember sitting in Andy and Bev Warren's house in Ethiopia chatting with Tim and Laura Love when yall walked in with your darling baby Esther. You had just gotten her checked out by a doctor because she had a cold or something. I remember Tim and Laura and I sat there on the verge of tears watching one of the most beautiful representations of the gospel, a redemption story, unfold right before our eyes. It was a very special evening that I remember very well. I will be praying for you as God goes before you in this third adoption. I have no doubt that God will bring more than you could ever imagine to your family through the blessing that you will call Samson.
