Adoption: The Couch Family
Please tell us about yourself — your location, job, etc!
We live in Middle Tennessee. Montie is a self-employed carpenter. Sallee is a home maker and home school mom (and currently sewing like crazy for our adoption fund!) We've been married for 20 years and have five children, two adopted from Ethiopia.
When/why did you decide to adopt?
Sallee: I always thought I'd have a little girl from China. I thought, as a very young girl, that I'd have children like the song Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World. The Lord clearly directed us to Ethiopia, after we were privileged to serve on a mission trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2004. After Gabriel was born (and because of very hard pregnancies)... we said that was our family. But the Lord put adoption on our hearts and through His provision made it possible
Montie: I knew pretty much after we got back from the mission trip to Ethiopia.
Do you have any biological children?
Adeline and Madison (twin girls) are almost Seventeen years old and our son, Gabriel, is twelve.
Whom did you adopt, and from where?
Esther, Ethiopia (2006)
Solomon, Ethiopia (2008)
In process, right now, of waiting for court dates for little Samson Jude!
What was their name, and did you rename them? Why or why not?
We kept the Ethiopian names, as the middle names of Esther Yordanos
And Solomon Natnael. Samson Jude will keep his Ethiopian name as his first name.
We just wanted to keep these because these were their given names from their birth country.
What has been the most surprising aspect of adoption?
The Lord has a way of providing the exact amount of money, patience, and endurance (as the journey is LONG.) There were also twists He led us through to bring just the child He had chosen for our family!
We love our adopted children, just as we do our bio children... it's not different at all. They are just as much as a part of us as the ones born to us.
What has been the most disappointing?
Lack of control of really anything in the journey! There is also the time element -especially when you 'have' your child identified and you wait excessively on the 'politics' of the process. It’s like being pregnant without a due date.
Once you go to get your child, it's most disappointing to see all of the other orphans… it makes you want to bring them ALL home.
What has been the most gratifying?
Not getting fat! lol
It's a picture of salvation that's lived out through adoption- the gospel.
Did any organization or agency really help you get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?
Our church, our friends, and some family helped financially and emotionally (and with words of encouragement.)
Show Hope- financially
Katelyn's Fund- through finances and encouragment (by staying in touch and praying)
Lifesong for Orphans-- through a matching grant
What advice would you give people who are considering adoption?
Don't let the financial fear get in the way of His call.
Don't let others' horror stories sway you.
Get ready for the ride, but if He has called you to the journey of adoption ... He will see you through. It's just not always as you think it will be or should be.
