147 million. That's how many orphans there are in the world. This family is decreasing that number, one kid at a time.
Please tell us about yourself.
I am stay home mom and co-founder of 147 Million Orphans w/ Suzanne Mayernick ... My husband is the Spiritual Life Director for Franklin Road Academy ... We live in Brentwood, Tennessee.
When/why did you decide to adopt?
Adoption had been on my heart for years, but it was when we heard the plight of little girls in China that friends of our challenged us to look into adopting a daughter ... We knew it was where we were being called.
Do you have any biological children?
Jeremiah 12, Elijah 8
Whom did you adopt, and from where?
Emily-6 from China, Maggie -5 from China, Joseph-4 from Uganda, Daisy-3 from Uganda.
What was their name, and did you rename them? Why or why not?
We did rename Emily, but kept part of her Chinese name (RUI) as her middle name. Maggie- we kept CHANG as her middle name. We renamed Joseph completely because he only had one name. For Daisy, we kept her name, because the flower daisy was instrumental in our fundraising and adoption story and when that was her given name we knew it was suppose to be her name.
What has been the most surprising aspect of adoption?
The daily blessings of knowing we all belong together no matter how we became family.
What has been the most disappointing?
I guess people thinking we shouldn't adopt because of shear numbers and the fact that my husband is a teacher and financially it has never made sense.
What has been the most gratifying?
Watching other families see our story and decided to make a difference in an orphan's life and ultimately being obedient to the FATHER.
Did any organization or agency really help you get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?
Show Hope helped us financially, Lisa Mosley was our social worker (adoption assistance) and Bethany Christian Services for our China adoptions - As far as emotionally the Mayernick family has walked very closely w/ us as walked the journey of two special needs children and that has made all the difference in the world.
What advice would you give people who are considering adoption?
Do your homework ... Think long term and not just about the journey to get your child ... The road is long, hard, and full of joy ... Adoption is the greatest blessing of our lives ...

So incredibly proud of all that you do with 147 million and moved by how you are helping this family. As a mother of two children that we have adopted-passionate about the cause of the orphan I am excited about what you do! I am also heart broken for this family because I know the suffering they are going through. Our oldest child is special needs. She has a rare seizure disorder and autism. She is three but will be developmentally between 14-24 months most likely for life--unless God steps in and provides a miracle. She has seizures daily that cause her to stop breathing...but in it all she has laughter, smiles galore and life that most of us only wish we knew. I am praying with you for this BEAUTIFUL family who stepped up and answered God's calling.

I met Gwen nearly two years ago. She was the foster mom to our baby girl for the first month of her life until we were able to come and bring her home.
