Adoption: The Mayernick Family
If there’s one thing that Suzanne Mayernick has learned about adoption, it’s that, just like pregnancy, no two are ever the same. She should know–she has four biological children, and three more children from adoption. Equally impressive, she has found the time to co-found and run “147 Million Orphans” a company dedicated to speaking out on behalf of orphans and adoption, generating income for Ugandan women, and providing support and encouragement to other adoptive families. And on top of that, she blogs.
But just saying that every adoption is unique doesn’t begin to capture the complexity of what can happen in the adoption process. Suzanne has personal experience of the intricacies of both domestic adoptions–the paperwork, the philosophical discussions that color the field, the laws and customs that make things tricky. Suzanne explained, “Uganda is unpredictable when it comes to adoption because their "time frame" doesn't really run parallel with the ‘American time frame.’” And then there was the matter of the legal framework: “In America, there seems to be more of a ‘system’ on how to accomplish most things. Uganda not necessarily…hahaha. Uganda is in the beginning stages of figuring this whole ‘adoption thing’ out.”
But nothing prepared her and her husband for what happened when they adopted their youngest from Uganda last year. During a routine medical exam while traveling, their new little girl Josie Love was diagnosed as HIV positive. When they found out, Suzanne’s husband Mike posted a note to her blog sharing just how much of a shock the news was. After all, a previous routine test had come out negative. There were no stock answers or quick solutions. They knew they’d be in a long struggle to help Josie heal her little body, and they knew they didn’t have the answers. And it hurt.
Both Mike and Suzanne drew on their faith to show them the way forward. Mike noted that a few years earlier a friend had given him a quotation that he now found perfectly apt: “The reward for considering the helpless is not just the end result, but the pain, the heart pain, that accompanies it. It is cleansing to hurt when God Himself hurts; it is a good thing.”
Suzanne became a quick student on HIV, and began to use her blog to educate others and help to separate fact from fears: “People CANNOT get HIV from kissing, touching, sharing a home, touching toilet seats, telephones, or doorknobs, eating or playing together, saliva, sweat, drinking or eating after each other.”
And little Josie began her treatments, including taking anti-retroviral medications. Within a month of beginning these treatments, her viral loads went from an alarming 700,000 to 1,800. Three months later, the viral loads were so small, they almost didn’t register.
With a mixture of pain, motherly love and hope, Suzanne initially “shifted into overdrive” to help her little girl get better: “Mama was going to do everything that needs to be done to get her baby better! I have had a mental checklist of the things medically that needed to be done for her to be able to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally. In the beginning, I thought she would for sure need physical therapy to walk, speech therapy to speak, and occupational therapy for all of the rest.”
In the end, she didn’t end up using any of these therapies, after discovering that Jose responded so beautifully to the “love therapy” of her home, new parents and siblings. “She is walking, her speech gets clearer and clearer by the day…The child can pour drinks, twist bottles open, polish nails and whatever else that she puts her mind to do! So, I have decided that our family will just continue to give ‘love’ therapy. The last time that we saw our infectious disease doctors I asked their opinion on what else that needed to be done for her. Their response: exactly what you are doing...it is working!”
Despite the pain and trials, the Mayernicks would still encourage people to consider adopting. As the name of their company reminds us, there are still something like 147 million orphans out there. As Mike reflected recently, “I remember that day like it was yesterday...the shock, the fear, the disbelief, the pain, the questions. You see, I’m a planner. I like to know what’s in front of me. Plan for the contingencies, quantify and mitigate the risks, expect the unexpected, examine the pros and cons of any situation so that a well thought out, logical decision can be made...that's me .... That day in Uganda a year ago threw me for a BIG loop. It wasn’t exactly the way I had it all planned out.”
And now? “As difficult and chaotic as our lives have become sometimes, I would not trade it for anything in the world.”
