Adoption: The Groce Family

What has been the most surprising aspect of adoption?

We have been most surprised at how much God has used this process to grow us, sanctify us and comfort us with His love. He has taught us about our own adoptions in Christ throughout this journey and our call throughout the church to care for orphans.

Please tell us about yourself — your location, job, etc!

Simon is an engineer and Mandy stays home with the kiddos.  We live in Louisville, Kentucky.

When/why did you decide to adopt?

Our first adoption was started after our first child was about 9 months old.  We love the picture of adoption, the beauty of being made into family in such a unique way.  God, through His good and perfect word, confirmed this for our family and made our process a joyful one.

Do you have any biological children?

Yes, 2

Whom did you adopt, and from where?

Miles (2006), Zinnia (2010)

What was their name, and did you rename them? Why or why not?

Mamush and Mesaye... We renamed our children as we feel that this is an opportunity to confirm their position in our home.  Mamush means baby and was a name given to Miles in the process of his intake in Ethiopia.  Part of Zinnia's given name is translated Hope, which we used as one of her middle names.

What has been the most disappointing?

How few people in the church follow through with resolve to care for orphans.

What has been the most gratifying?

Being parents is the most gratifying blessing!  Our family and friends have been so joyous along with us as we've been blessed by these sweet children.

Did any organization or agency really help you get through the process, financially, emotionally, or otherwise?

Holt International

What advice would you give people who are considering adoption?

Adoption is such a joy.  We are so thankful for our precious children and the journey to get them, though difficult, is nothing in comparison with the gift of being their parents.
